Post 6 - Group Work

Now that I have a better understanding of how to write up a script I am going to select, from within my group, the best logline written by a fellow group member of mine has been selected and will be developed further.
A girl makes the best of a bad situation and uses her found abilities to keep her partner safe

Below is a group brainstorm for our chosen logline.

Post 5 - Formatting your script

When it comes to script writing for beginners, there are 3 basic points to remember for the whole script. They are 'Headings', 'Narrative description' and 'Dialogue'.

Headings - There are several headings to remember when writing a script, they include 'The camera location, the scene location and the time of day'. This can be expressed as the following,

SCENE NO.       INT/EXT       LOCATION         TIME OF DAY

Narrative Description - This includes 'action', 'sounds' and 'character and settings (visual)'. This is shown to be apart from the dialogue. This is pretty much stage directions and instructions that the characters must follow.

Dialogue - This is all forms of speech and soundtrack when possible, speech is shown to be in centred in the page underneath the Characters name in bold which is also placed in the centre of the game.

Post 4 - Beats

For this post we are asked to look into what is meant by 'Beating', this is an Hollywood term for beating out an idea, it is also like beats to a bar in music. A beat is when something happens.
An demonstration of this is like in the example below, this is a typical structure to a story in the style of beats.

  • Beat 1 – Introduce the world the film will be in
  • Beat 2 – Introduce the character
  • Beat 3 – Introduce the problem
  • Beat 4 – How the character chooses to solve the problem
  • Beat 5 – The character experiences a major set back
  • Beat 6 – The character is almost defeated
  • Beat 7 – The character rejects a solution
  • Beat 8 – The character discovers a solution

An example of what beats look like is this.

  • Beat 1 - A man walks into the elevator
  • Beat 2 - A man stands alone in the elevator
  • Beat 3 - 3 Large people walk into the elevator
  • Beat 4 - 3 more large people walk into the elevator
  • Beat 5 - 1 more large person walks into the elevator, the man from the beginning notices the 'maximum weight' sign.
  • Beat 6 - The man from the beginning calculates the current maximum weight and realises the weight of the current elevator is over the average.
  • Beat 7 - A huge man walks towards the elevator
  • Beat 8 - The man from the beginning flees the current elevator
  • Beat 9 - The man enters a new 'normal' elevator
  • Beat 10 - All of the people in the new elevator are sick and begin to cough, so does the man from the beginning.
  • Beat 11 - The man from the beginning realises that the sick people are en route to a Swine Flu examination.

Post 3 - Characterisation

Protagonist - The main character, often good. The person at the centre of the action, can be shown to be the character of authority, a leader of the group.
Antagonist - Opposite to the protagonist, as they oppose to the ways of the hero.

My favourite logline out of all them in the previous posts has to be the last idea (Idea 7 - The zombies). The logline for that idea is as follows,

'A man is the last person on earth as zombies take over'

My main character would be a strong, independent male, a name such as 'Hunter' fits the bill well. I will develop Hunter further as I ask him questions about his everyday life prior to the events of the film taking place.

1) What is your current job and what does the role involve?
I currently work in the recruitment office at 'Army Jobs', I recruit the next generation of soldiers as I personally train them and prepare them for various locations across the globe.
2) Describe yourself in 3 words
Dedicated, Determined and Tough
3) How far does your family stretch?
Well I lost my parents at a young age, so I've pretty much had to be independent all of my life along with my younger brother. We have no grandparents/aunties/uncles etc. as they have either passes away or me and my brother have lost contact with them, I mean we're older now what with me being 23 and my brother 18.
4) What is your greatest achievement in life so far?
Probably swimming the English channel and running the London marathon, both tasks took a lot of determination, physical/mental strength to complete.

Post 2C - Loglines and character development

To go with my following log lines, I will pick a character and look to develop them. For example for my 4th idea:

1) Who is my character? - my main character would be a former rock star.
2) Where are they experiencing their problem? - The problem is finding the former band mates.
3) What is the solution? - They all meet and plan a re-union.

Another example is my seventh idea.
1) Who is my character? - My main character would be a strong, independent, brave male.
2) Where are they experiencing their problem? - Their problem are zombies, and lots of them! Chasing after the main man.
3) What is the solution? - He finds a good place to hide.
